The Gold-filled process, literally "filled gold" or "rolled gold", is an English legal name for silversmithing. It is a solid gold envelope that is affixed hot or pressurized on a metal base such as copper. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission defines the minimum amount of gold on the jewel: if the object is "Gold filled 10kt," it means that it must contain at least 1/10th of its gold weight; if the object is rated "Gold-filled 12 kt" or higher (e.g. "Gold-filled 14 kt" or "Gold-filled 18 kt"), this means that at least 1/20th of its total weight is gold, or 5%.
